(WFRV) - The Wisconsin Department of Transportation announced its November Law of the Month, the "Move Over Law," which reminds drivers to brake for roadside workers and much more. "Stepping out onto the side of the road is one of the most dangerous parts of our job, and we have seen our own officers injured and killed in these preventable crashes." The release added that in the past five years, there have been 60 emergency responders struck by vehicles and injured while working on Wisconsin roads. In 2023, 32 were struck and killed by vehicles while working on the side of roads across the country. In a Facebook post, the Wisconsin State Patrol added that it's critical to not be distracted while driving, and especially in emergency response areas. "No handheld phone use within 500 feet of an emergency response area," the post said. The goal is to call attention to the risks that first responders take while on duty, and encourage drivers nationwide to be attentive and aware of their surroundings, especially in an emergency response area.
