FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) — Former Mayor Tom Henry's legacy was commemorated on Wednesday after a local project aiming to boost economic development was named after him.
The Tom Henry Industrial Park not only serves to remember the beloved mayor, but to also facilitate business activity on the south side of Fort Wayne.
The park has been under construction for several years now. The 12-plot, 160-acre park is complete with roads, as well as water and sewage systems already installed. Organizers say the park aims to address the shortage of "shovel-ready" land needed to keep up with the industrial growth experienced over time in Fort Wayne.
The Zacher Company and Allied Commercial, the two sales and leasing agents for this park, sought to honor Mayor Henry's legacy through naming the project after him.
Members of Mayor Henry's family came out to the park to attend the dedication ceremony this morning.
One of them, Jerome Henry Jr., said the Tom Henry Industrial Park fits well with his brother's mission of lifting up the community.
"I think he'd be proud to have something named after himself," Henry said. "Especially if it was named after economic development and created jobs, he'd be all into that."
Members of Mayor Henry's family came to the ceremony.
The industrial park was named after late Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry.
The park is 160 acres.
Mayor Henry died in March of this year due to complications related to his cancer. He served as Mayor of Fort Wayne for 4 terms.
The Tom Henry Industrial Park is now open for businesses to purchase lots.
