McDonald's is bringing back its Holiday Pie in select markets: What even is it?
Nov 13, 2024
(NEXSTAR) – When the average American bakes up a traditional holiday pie, they usually opt for something along the lines of apple, pecan, pumpkin or even sweet potato.
But not McDonald’s. McDonald’s just has to be different.
The McDonald’s Holiday Pie — which contains no fruit or nuts to speak of — is coming back for the 2024 holiday season at select locations starting on November 15, McDonald’s has confirmed.
Why does the McDonald’s Filet-O-Fish have only a half-slice of cheese?
“Enjoy creamy, smooth custard nestled in a flaky, buttery crust glazed with sugar and topped with rainbow sprinkles for a limited time only in select local markets including Seattle, Los Angeles, St. Louis, New York City, Cleveland, Dallas and more,” a McDonald’s spokesperson told Nexstar in an emailed statement.
The spokesperson was not able to say which additional markets (i.e., the “more” mentioned above) might be offering the pies. Customers are being advised to check their local restaurants' offerings via the McDonald’s app.

The McDonald’s Holiday Pie first debuted in 1999 as a promotional item for the film “Toy Story 2,” according to a fan-sourced Fandom page not officially associated with McDonald’s.
“It is arguably one of the rarest McDonald's menu items to date and, unlike the regular apple pie, the Holiday Pie is usually, but not always, available during the holiday season, from November through December,” the site says.
Why doesn’t McDonald’s have a plant-based burger?
A representative for McDonald’s couldn’t say how long the Holiday Pie would remain on the menu during its 2024 return, but indicated it would be available “while supplies last.”
And despite not being as traditional as, say, a pumpkin or apple pie in the shape of a common holiday pie, there appears to be vocal interest in the McDonald’s interpretation.
"I don’t eat McDonald’s anymore but I want a holiday pie," one fan wrote on X.
