New Labor and Delivery Unit set to open in Northeast Columbia this January
Nov 13, 2024
COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO) — Expectant moms in the Northeast area of Columbia will soon be able to give birth a little closer to home.
Just off of Farrow Road, MUSC Health Columbia Medical Center Northeast is announcing an addition to its family — its new Labor and Delivery Unit.
“Northeast Columbia is growing at an extremely rapid pace, one of the highest rates in the country. So right now we are investing in our community by opening a labor and delivery unit to accommodate the growth that’s currently and we anticipate in our future,” says Chief Operating Officer Matthew Medley.
The wing is equipped with a newborn nursery, four specialized labor and delivery rooms, and eight postpartum recovery rooms.
Its larger spaces are designed to provide a more comfortable and supportive environment for expecting families.
“Some people want maybe a facility that’s closer to home that feels a little more like an extension of their living room, so I think having healthcare to fit the patient’s taste and convenience is ideal,” says OBGYN Dr. Todd Kraemer.
The new space is also projected to cut down on travel time for expecting moms in the area, allowing them to stay much closer to home.
“This is an incredible place to be. It’s a special community and a special environment, and we are so excited to serve the needs of Northeast Columbia, but this is the place that you want to be. When you walk in the door, our culture and our facilities are going to welcome you and grow with you and your family,” says Medley.
The new Labor and Delivery Unit will open January 2025 and will be staffed by around six doctors/providers and 40 nurses.
