BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — A Georgia woman accused of embezzling more than $1.6 million from a local business and laundering the fraudulent proceeds was sentenced to 63 months in federal prison. Thanh Hoa Thi Bui, 42, of Valdosta, Georgia, was sentenced to 63 months after being convicted of wire fraud and making unlawful monetary transactions. She was also further sentenced to serve three years of supervised release after her term of imprisonment and ordered to pay $1,694,095.59 in restitution, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. Between 2017 and 2020, Bui lived in Denham Springs and worked at a small business in Baton Rouge. According to the DOJ, she was trusted to help with bookkeeping and accounting. Police: Man arrested in connection to Zachary carjacking, shooting From September 2017 through November 2020, Bui embezzled more than $1.6 million from the business by using the company's bank account to make hundreds of fake transactions and hiding the scheme from her employer, according to the DOJ. On more than 100 occasions, Bui used her access to the victim's bank account to produce checks that were payable to herself and then used fake pretenses to convince her employer to sign the checks, which she would deposit into one of her personal bank accounts, according to the DOJ. The DOJ stated, "Bui also used the victim's bank account to pay the electricity and gas for a large chicken farm that she maintained in Mississippi and to make payments to a company in Covington, Louisiana, to which she owed money for real estate that she and another individual had purchased." According to the DOJ, Bui took considerable steps to hide the scheme, as well as "quickly move the proceeds through her bank accounts, withdraw the funds in cash and make other transactions." Bui was indicted in July 2023 by a federal grand jury and the court issued an arrest warrant. According to the DOJ, she was arrested in Las Vegas, Nevada.
