Kern Valley State Prison inmate dies after attack by cellmate: CDCR

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- An inmate serving a sentence for human trafficking of a child was allegedly killed by his cellmate at Kern Valley State Prison in Delano.
California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation officials said Darius J. Swain, 41, died after he was found unresponsive in his cell on Nov. 9. Swain's death is being investigated as a homicide.
Swain's cellmate, Gregory Clark, 58, was found with blood on his clothing and was taken into custody, according to a release.

Officials said Swain was treated at Kern Valley State Prison and was pronounced dead. CDCR did not describe an attack or state what type of injuries Swain suffered before he died.
The Kern County Coroner's Office will determine the Swain's cause of death.
Swain was serving a sentence of life with the possibility of parole for human trafficking of a minor, pimping, robbery and illegal firearm possession since 2019.
Clark is serving a 22-year sentence for corporal injury on a spouse/cohabitant since 2011. Clark was sentenced to two additional years in prison for an assault by a prisoner with a deadly weapon.

Swain's death is the second death of an inmate at prisons in Delano. An inmate was reported killed on Sunday at North Kern State Prison. The two incidents do not appear to be related.
Kern Valley State Prison is located in Delano -- about 35 miles north of Bakersfield -- and currently houses more than 3,100 inmates.
