Good QB, bad QB: Browns’ Jameis Winston a weekly mystery
Nov 13, 2024
Tune to FOX television at 1 p.m. Nov. 17 for the weekly three-hour mystery titled: “Which version of Jameis Winston will the Browns get this week?”
Winston will make his third start for the 2-7 Browns when they face his former team, the Saints (3-7), at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans. Winston threw three touchdown passes and no interceptions on Oct. 27 in a stunning, 29-24 upset of the Baltimore Ravens. A week later he threw one touchdown pass (with 44 seconds remaining) and three interceptions in a crash-back-to-earth 27-10 loss to the Chargers.
The Browns spent last week on their bye looking for ways to at least salvage some respect in this lost season.
“Any player with reps or time certainly has the ability to settle in and get more comfortable with what we’re doing,” Coach Kevin Stefanski said before practice Nov. 13. “Jameis has been here since the spring. We’ve gotten to know him really well on the field as well as off the field. I think we’re getting to know his comfort level more with the more reps he takes.”
Winston moved in as the starter a week after Deshaun Watson suffered a ruptured right Achilles tendon Oct. 20 in the second quarter of a game with the Bengals. Dorian Thompson-Robinson took over immediately after Watson was injured, but DTR was 11-of-24 for 82 yards and threw two interceptions.

Games like the ones Winston played against the Ravens and then the Saints typify his career. In 2019 with the Buccaneers, the last year he was a full-time starter, he threw 33 touchdown passes and 30 interceptions. That season he threw four touchdown passes and one pick in a 55-40 win over the Raiders. Two weeks later, he threw one TD pass and five interceptions in a 37-26 loss to Carolina. That same season he had one touchdown pass and four interceptions in a 23-20 loss to the Texans a week after four TD passes and one pick in a 38-17 romp over the Lions.

Winston signed with the Saints in 2020. He played in only four games without a start, but he said it was an important season for him because he learned from Coach Sean Payton and quarterback Drew Brees.
“I’m really grateful for the one year I had with Sean Payton and Drew Brees just learning how to play the quarterback position the right way,” Winston said Nov. 13 in the Browns’ locker room. “I was looking to take all the super powers Drew and Sean had and implement them in my system.
“It’s what to do and what not to do. When you see a quarterback that’s done it at a high level for a long time (Brees) under a system he’s been in for a long time, you just see the day-in and day-out details of every play.”
So if Winston in that 2020 season learned what not to do as he listened to Payton and watched Brees (24 touchdown passes and six interceptions in 2020), why does it look like Winston intentionally throws passes to players on the opposing team, which he obviously doesn’t do intentionally?
“That goes to one play at a time,” Winston said. “Everyone has their unique perspective. Only 32 people are actually within the pocket and getting a chance to execute that.
“With my preparation, I’m going to continue to focus on one play at a time, eliminate the negatives and build on the positives.”
Before the bye, Stefanski said the plan is for Winston to start the final eight games. He said on Nov. 11 that special plays for DTR might be incorporated into the game plan week to week depending on the defense the Browns face.
