Fairfax County residents to weigh in on proposed fee increases for recreational activities

FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. (DC News Now) -- Residents in Fairfax County could soon be paying more in fees to access recreational centers and activities.
According to Fairfax County, more than 60% of park fees go toward park operations and upkeep, including camps, community classes and amenities.
Now, the county is asking residents to weigh in on proposed fee increases.
Lori Lash, who lives in Fairfax County, told DC News Now that she thinks the fee increases are a good idea as long as they are applied to every park in the county.
“If they're going to increase the fees, they should go towards all the parks, the smaller community parks, as well as the larger parks, to make sure that they're kept up and they're safe for the kids to use,“ said Lash.

Fairfax’s park system includes more than 23,000 acres that cover 420 parks and 324 miles of trails.
Most of the fees are incremental increases; however, others are set to rise sharply.
For example, access to the recreational center swimming pools would increase by a few cents, while a 10-day pass for public skating lessons would increase by almost $30. Fee increases would also go toward personnel costs.
"If those fees are going towards staffing and maintenance of all the facilities, I'd be up for an increase in the fees," Lash said.
County residents will have until Nov. 29 to weigh in on the proposal. The Park Authority Board will consider the fee increases on Dec. 11.
