ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — If you head into Rochester on I-490 from west, you might be wondering about the work going on just past the I-390 onramp. What appears to be clearing and leveling of land is actually cleanup of a New York Superfund site. The area being worked on is the Dearcop Farm site at 92 Dearcop Road in Gates. It's bordered by the expressways, the Erie Canal and two Gates neighborhoods. Map of Dearcop Farm site provided by NYS DEC The site is listed as a Class 2 inactive hazardous waste site, which "represents a significant threat to public health or the environment," according to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. In addition to DEC oversight and the development of a site management plan, the cleanup involves: Long-term groundwater monitoring. Green remediation methods, such as limiting vehicle idling and planting native wildflowers. Clearing the vacant portion of the site and installing two feet of clean fill and soil. Work started in September and is expected to take 10 months, with a three-month winter shutdown in December. The project will cost $2.3 million according to the DEC.
