WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) -- Blood pressure kits are now available for checkout at Wichita-area libraries. The kits are available at the Wichita Advanced Learning Library, the Evergreen Branch, the Clearwater Public Library and the Mount Hope Public Library. The kits are part of the American Heart Association’s ongoing “Libraries with Heart” program. “Meeting people where they are is fundamental to our mission at the American Heart Association,” says Heather Smart, Senior Development Director, American Heart Association. “Not only is ‘Libraries with Heart’ an opportunity for people to learn more about their health, but it also provides access to community resources so those who need it can follow up and take charge of their health. Everyone involved in this program is seeking to remove barriers to healthcare access and save lives.” Ramp, lanes close in north Wichita Courtesy American Heart Association Each kit includes a blood pressure monitor, guides from the American Heart Association on measuring your blood pressure correctly, an explanation of the results, and a list of local medical providers to follow up with. The kits were made possible thanks to the AHA, K-State Research & Extension – Sedgwick County, a local philanthropic organization called Grumpy Old Men, Wichita Medical Research & Education Foundation, and several other local organizations. Nearly half of all adults in the US have high blood pressure. It is called the silent killer because up to 36% of those with high blood pressure are unaware that they have it. High blood pressure can lead to strokes, heart disease, kidney disease, vision loss, and other serious issues affecting quality of life. Managing high blood pressure through medication, proper nutrition, and other healthy habits is the only way to prevent serious complications.
