TOPEKA (KSNT) - Organizers of a longstanding Topeka holiday tradition say their event is cancelled for 2024. The Topeka Performing Arts Center (TPAC) holds an annual fundraiser each year called Gingerbread Homes for the Holidays. While the event usually draws in children and families each year to participate in the construction of gingerbread houses towards the end of the year, 2024's event was cancelled at the last minute. It was originally set to happen on Nov. 15 to Nov. 17. Organizers told 27 News construction at TPAC forced them to look elsewhere for a new venue for the event. They eventually landed on Topeka's West Ridge Mall but, due to logistical problems, TPAC had to make the decision to cancel the event. New health center for older adults plans grand opening in Topeka Gingerbread Homes for the Holidays was originally part of the Topeka Jingle Days passport celebrations. People participating in this program can use the Gingerbread Homes for the Holidays as a free space on their passports. Making gingerbread houses is a longstanding tradition in the country with roots set in Germany where the first such homes were made. Creating gingerbread homes also has ties to the classic tale from the Brothers Grimm "Hansel and Gretel" where two children encounter a witch in a house made of gingerbread.
