Appleton replaced all public private lead service lines, part of federal drinking water mandate
Nov 13, 2024
APPLETON, Wis. (WFRV) - The City of Appleton has provided an update on the progress of its Lead Reduction Program, saying that all public and private lead service lines have been replaced.
Following the announcement of a new federal mandate to eliminate lead drinking water service lines, the City of Appleton has accelerated its efforts since 2020. Still, it has been working to eliminate its remaining lead drinking water infrastructure for decades.
The accelerated efforts have been a part of Mayor Woodford's administration with the support of the Common Council.

Through Appleton's Lead Reduction Program, the City has completed its city-wide inventory of service line materials as mandated by the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Lead and Copper Rule Revisions (LCRR) and developed an online lookup tool for residents to check the material of their own lateral.
City officials say the next phase of the program will focus on the continued replacement of galvanized service lines. Nearly 400 galvanized service lines have been replaced since 2022, and by mid-November, the approximately 900 remaining property owners will receive notification letters informing them that their homes have galvanized water service lines.
Galvanized water service lines have been identified as a potential public health concern as they may have absorbed lead content from upstream lead laterals.
