Veterans Resource Center, 'Path to Freedom' helping veterans overcome homelessness and more
Nov 13, 2024
HOUSTON (KIAH) — As we approach Veterans Day on November 11, we're shedding light on the challenges they face, and what resources are out there to help them.
Research from the Veterans Affairs shows veteran homelessness increased in 2023 by more than 7 percent, compared to the year before. The Houston Community Resource and Referral Center of Houston is a lifeline, that provides health and well being resources for Veterans who may be struggling and in need. From showers to laundry services, to meals, health screens and so much more. All of that is available to those who have served our country.
CW39's Sharron Melton sits down with Emily Winfield from the Veterans Affairs Office, to tell us more about the center along with military veteran Michael White, to talk about how the center helped him.
The new Houston CRRC, located at 1700 Webster, is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Also, sometimes incarceration can be roadblock to veterans finding permanent housing.
Resources are also available to help people get back on their feet after being incarcerated. Sharron Melton talks with military vet Danny Sneed, who created an organization called "Path to Freedom" to help these vets.
If you are a Veteran or know of a Veteran who is homeless or at imminent risk of homelessness, call the National Call Center for Homeless Veterans at 877-424-3838 for assistance. It is staffed 24/7 with trained counselors who can talk with you right now and connect you with your nearest VA for help. The phone number for the CRRC is 713-230-2810.
