ISLE OF PALMS, S.C. (WCBD) - Isle of Palms City Council unanimously approved parking changes for the beach season.
This past season, a new parking system was implemented on the Isle of Palms. City council members met Tuesday night to review how that plan performed.
Isle of Palms voted to raise parking rather, and they'll not have committees consider parking validation for beachfront businesses.
Since PCI Municipal Services started handling parking, the city saw an increase of nearly $50,000, this year compared to last. City council passed a plan to up parking rates by 50-cent on Ocean Boulevard, matching the county's parking rate for their periods.
Isle of Palms Mayor Phillip Pounds explained where the parking money goes.
"Some of that money we use to pay beach renourishment or beach access paths and other tourist type things, and we have police and fire that we use to pay accommodations tax and such to pay some of those expenses as well," he said.
The council voted to bring the idea of validating parking to their committee so they can work with the local businesses on the beachfront if they would like to participate.
"...if you're in downtown Charleston and you go to a restaurant sometimes they'll give you a 2-hour voucher for parking, some type of situation like that. So, if someone's at the Windjammer or somewhere else they would have validated parking for an hour or two through the company," said Mayor Pounds.
The council also saw that the percentage of visitors who paid with the mobile app increased from 54 % to 85% percent this year and they will continue trying to raise that number.
"Where I hear more feedback is people who come for the day or the week so try to make signage as easy as possible, moving people to the app and things like that," said Mayor Pounds.
The Isle of Palms hopes to make these changes by March or April of next year. Residents will still be able to park for free on the island.
