Spot of T: Battling an election hangover
Nov 13, 2024
No matter the results of this year’s election, whether or not your candidates came out victorious, you have to admit one thing. The day after the election was … quiet. Peaceful. And long-awaited.
For months before the elections, we were inundated with television ads, social media campaigns, text messages, phone calls, flyers delivered to your door, just an overall onslaught of unsolicited rhetoric.
The ads, it seems to me, were less highlighting the positive qualities of the candidates and more mudslinging, pointing out the many negative qualities of their opponents.
It seems that every street in eastern Pennsylvania was lined with signs for various candidates for the many different races. Dare I say, it was audio and visual overload to the nth degree.
Now that it is over, I find myself trying to deal with the residue of months of swimming in the political maelstrom. I am battling what I’ll call election hangover. Here are some indications that you too may have been affected:
• If you sit down to watch TV and have your finger poised over the mute button on the remote control to silence all the unpleasant political ads, you may be election hungover.
• If you open your mailbox, remove your mail and immediately toss it into the recycle bin without bothering to glance at it because chances are it’s all political ads, you may be election hungover.
• If you still look with disdain at the houses that had signs in the yard of the candidate you did not vote for, whether or not you know the residents, you are definitely election hungover.
• If you keep your phone on silent to avoid the many texts, calls and messages from candidates from virtually every political race in the country, you may be election hungover.
Not all signs of being politically hungover are bad. For instance, if you chose to read an old-fashioned book rather than watch TV or social media just to avoid the political madness that overcame the country prior to Nov. 6, congratulations! You took those political lemons and made some lemonade.
But the best news is this: It’s over. The hype, the stress, the frenzy, it’s all behind us. Give yourself a pat on the back, you got through it! The residual hangover symptoms will fade. Life will return to normal.
Whether or not you are happy with the results, I promise the sun will most definitely rise tomorrow morning. The mild temperatures continue into November, so perhaps a nice walk in the sunshine will help you to clear your head and reset.
Take a deep breath, and continue to count your blessings. Let go of the ugliness and the negativity. Life is good, nothing changes that. And the best news? We don’t have to do this again for a whole year! Enjoy!
