Council elects new mayor for Newport

NEWPORT, R.I. (WLNE) — There’s a new mayor for the city of Newport.
Councilor Charles Holder Jr. was elected by the Newport City Council last night to serve as mayor for the 2024-2026 term.
Holder was the winner of the Newport City Council election, winning 4,733 of the votes.
Now former Mayor Xay Khamsyvoravong offered the nomination.
In a Facebook post, Khamsyvoravong said that over the past two years, he’s went “beyond the floor of the ceremonial job description for Newport’s Mayor and used it as a platform to make big changes to help Newporters.”
“In the face of difficult decisions, I have consistently and knowingly chosen progress for Newport over personal political convenience. That’s just who I am,” he said.
“Charlie Holder is a good friend and colleague and he has the Council-Elect’s support for Chair. He has my full support and I look forward to returning to the Council for another two years to help Newporters,” he continued.
