Crews will begin work on widening Puʻunēnē from two to four lanes between Wākea Avenue and Kūihelani Highway.
Crews will also add concrete sidewalks, multiuse shoulders, enhanced street lighting, updated traffic signalization and hydraulic improvements.
The hydraulic improvements aim "to improve water quality and reduce the impact of the roadway stormwater on the existing drainage system."
“The highway upgrades and improvements will ensure operational efficiency and safer commuting for all highway users in the heart of Kahului," said Ed Sniffen, HDOT Director.
According to the Department of Transportation, crews are working on a retaining wall along the roadway.
Widening work will begin in January and will be completed in phases. Officials said the project is set to be completed by April 2026.
