SENECA COUNTY, N.Y. (WROC) — A loud and large push Tuesday by those living around a local landfill to stop any plans to keep it open for another twenty-five more years. Residents voiced their concerns before the Seneca County Board of Supervisors. Seneca County calls for DEC to investigate potential impacts of the landfill News 8 stood outside the Seneca County Government Office, and while residents walked into the building, they noted the stench in the air. We smelled it too out there. The Seneca Meadows Landfill is due to shut down next year, however its operator Waste Connections has applied for a permit to continue operations through 2040. ‘We’ve become a dumping ground’: Residents of Seneca Falls beg Town Board to vote ‘no’ to continued landfill operation The meeting started with the presentation of the Draft Seneca County Local Solid Waste Management Plan. "Some of the alternative technologies that were examined during the process were mixed municipal solid waste composting, exportation of waste and the idea of a new landfill," Rachel Scudder with Genesee Finger Lakes Regional Planning Council said. But when the public input on the plan began, residents said one thing was not acknowledged. "You need to put the closure of Seneca Meadows on the solid management plan," one resident, Valerie, said. Those who have endured the smell for years, say the plan presented "sets Seneca County up to fail in meeting the waste management goals set by the state." "I have not smelled fresh air in 10 years," one resident said. "We must put our families first and protect our links and our environment," another resident said. "Seneca County is maintaining the status quo and is allowed to do so because the citizens of Seneca county are not the solid waste producers," another resident said. In October, the County Board of Supervisors voted to urge the DEC to look into potential health impacts that any continued operation of the landfill would have on the community. "We all want to rely less on Seneca Meadows," one resident said. "We need a solid waste management plan to help us get there." The public comment period for residents to share their thoughts closes Friday. "Community members can submit written comments, prior to the November 15 deadline, to Jill Henry, Director of Planning and Community Development, 1 DiPronio Drive, Waterloo, NY 13165. Or, email [email protected]" One supervisor on the board nearly demanded the DEC to sit in on the next meeting for a chance to hear from residents directly.
