'It was very traumatizing': Cleanup efforts underway in Fresno after dust storm, heavy rain

FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - Strong winds and heavy rain swept across the Central Valley on Monday, downing trees and spewing debris across the Fresno roads.
The weather also caused extensive damage to buildings and homes, including a covered parking structure at an apartment complex in Central Fresno.
Carla Sanchez lives at the Paradise Apartments and was on the phone with her mom when a tree came crashing down, right next to the window of her apartment unit.
"I just look out the window and I see the trees falling, and I'm thinking it's going to hit. So, we're scared, you know, And we just ended up running out and it fell right here. And we just see it smash all the cars. It was bad. It was bad," she said while shaking her head. "Everybody was scared. It was... it was very traumatizing."
Another resident, Keyona Chadman, headed outside the moment she heard a loud noise.
She explained that she saw her children narrowly escape the tree’s falling branches while hitting her car.
"I was ready to blow stuff up for real. But I didn't. I just had to let God handle it, you know?" Chadman said.
According to Scott Mozier, public works director for the City of Fresno, crews worked through the night to clean up the mess.
“Today, we've done a couple of different things. We've had 22 staff from our landscape division mobilized into the forestry unit to take on a lot of the tree debris. And then as usual, when we have major storm rainfall coming in, then that does cause potholes within the street. So, we've had a dozen staff working in our ramped-up pothole effort today," Mozier said Tuesday.
Mozier said their department had over 100 tree-related service calls while the rain and wind hammered the city.
"As public works, we always have tree crews on call and we very quickly mobilized after that. We initially had our one on-call tree crew and as things ramped up, brought in a second crew and ultimately had six crews out working. So, and crews finished up their work about 1 a.m. last night."
Mozier explained Fresno residents should see crews out in force continuing cleanup efforts.
"We expect some of the large tree cleanup to continue throughout the week. We've made sure, too, that all trees that are down are in a safe condition. But for example, some within our city parks are very large, mature, mature trees that have gone down, and the cleanup will take quite a few days," he said.
He encourages anyone with damage to their home or property to download the FresGO app or call 311.
"What that does is it enables that report, whether it's a tree down pothole flooding on a street to get dispatch to the crews as quickly as possible as far as damages," Mozier said. "The Fresno app is the best. That's downloadable, no cost and that works great, whether it's potholes, street lights, out, graffiti, any issue of concern."
