How it Happened
For the second year in a row, the Rhode Island men’s basketball team is off to a 3-0 start thanks to a 105-73 win over Franklin Pierce on Tuesday night at the Ryan Center. It was the first time that the Rams had surpassed 100 points since a 107-65 victory over Marist on Nov. 14, 2016.
Rhody had initially stalled out of the gate and did not take its first lead until a Jamarques Lawrence dunk put the team up 17-16 about five and a half minutes into the game. The bucket punctuated a 6-0 run for the Rams, who had fallen behind due to Franklin Pierce’s (0-3) long-range shooting. Nine of the Ravens’ first 16 points came from beyond the arc.
Eventually, URI (3-0) pulled away by double digits with just under nine minutes to go after Jaden House knocked down a pair of free throws (35-24). Though Rhode Island remained out in front, it was unable to increase the margin by much more as the Ravens continued to shoot the three. Rhode Island went into the halftime break up 55-48.
Rhody padded its lead after the pause and extended its edge to 75-55 when Quentin Diboundje drew a foul on an attempted put-back and converted one of two free throw attempts with a 13 and a half minutes left in the game.
Later, a Javonte Brown basket assisted by Tyonne Farrell put his team ahead by 30 (95-64) with 5:56 on the clock. Three minutes later, Farrell tipped the Rams over the 100-point mark with a floater. Defensively, the Rams held the Ravens without a field goal for the final two minutes as they cruised to victory.
Inside the Box Score
This is the first time in program history that the Rams have scored 90-plus points in their first three games.
Rhody has had at least four players with 10+ points in all three games this season. Five achieved the feat against Franklin Pierce.
Guard Jaden House led the team with 21 points. He hit a trey with 17:31 left in the game to surpass 1,500 career points. A 1,000-point scorer in three years at High Point, he needs 495 more to reach 1,000 for URI.
House finished with four boards while adding two assists.
Forward Tyonne Farrell recorded his first career double-double with 10 points and as many boards. Both his rebounds and six assists were career highs.
Guard Jamarques Lawrence was a perfect 4-for-4 from the floor and made all three of his three-point attempts. He also knocked down each of his seven free throws and was just one point away from tying his career high of 19.
Center Javonte Brown poured in 16 points and recorded three blocks for the fourth time in his career.
Forward David Green finished with 15 points, four rebounds and three assists.
Forward David Fuchs also had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. He made a career-high six free throws on 10 attempts.
Guard Cam Estevez made the first start of his sophomore season, finishing with six points, four rebounds and one block.
Rhody attempted a season-high 50 free throws, knocking down 36. Rhode Island has made 30+ free throws in two of its three games this year, having gone 34-of-41 in the season opener against Fairfield (Nov. 4).
Both teams finished with 40 bench points.
