UH prepares for Utah State and the cold in final road trip
Nov 12, 2024
The University of Hawaii football team is on a mission to bounce back after a third close loss, falling by three points or fewer this season. As the Rainbow Warriors gear up for their final road trip of the year, they’re packing winter gear for the cold ahead.
Hawaii will face Utah State on Saturday in Logan, where the weather forecast calls for 35 degrees and a 35% chance of snow. Beyond Utah State’s strong passing game, ranked second in the conference, UH will also confront the elements. In UH’s Division I history, dating back to 1974, the team has only played in four games at 38 degrees or below and a total of 14 at 40 or under.

Junior safety Peter Manuma said, “A new experience is always good. But like (defensive coordinator) Coach Dennis Thurman says, the field is still 100 yards, 53 yards sideline to sideline. We’re still going to play.”

Head coach Timmy Chang added, “It’ll be a different field, but the mindset and the goal are the same. We’re going to be in a different environment for about four hours, and you find ways to get the job done. That’s what’s most important.”
Senior wide receiver Jonah Panoke, who hasn’t played in such weather, said, “All we gotta do is just adapt.”
The Rainbow Warriors enter the game 4-6 overall, 2-3 in the Mountain West, and need to win their final two games to keep any bowl game hopes alive. Since UH played two FCS opponents this season, only one win (either Delaware State or Northern Iowa) counts toward bowl eligibility. UH would need a 7-5 record to automatically qualify, but a 6-6 finish could still earn them a spot if there aren’t enough automatic qualifiers, as happened in 2016 and 2021.
Panoke remarked, “I was just talking to my wife that I only really have two guaranteed games left, and I’d love to have an extra game, an extra month with these boys. We just got to take one game at a time.”
Manuma added, “I think everybody’s motivated to get these two wins, to finish strong for the seniors, for the guys who set the path before us. We wouldn’t want to send them off any other way but with a victory.”
The Rainbow Warriors and Aggies are set for Saturday at 10 a.m. HST, with pregame coverage starting at 9:30 on Spectrum Sports pay-per-view.
