De Pere Cinema fundraising to get camper for Hurricane Helene victims

DE PERE, Wis. (WFRV) — At De Pere Cinema, sausage, pepperoni, and cheese might be the finishing touches to Vicki Radue’s pizzas, but she and her husband Mike hope it’s just the beginning of helping others start over from scratch.
This week, they are holding a fundraiser at their movie theater, contributing half of their pizza proceeds and 100% of popcorn proceeds toward purchasing a camper for those in Tennessee and North Carolina affected by Hurricane Helene.

“There are 17 families that lost their entire homes,” Mike said. “It’s Tennessee, but it’s high enough elevation and in the eastern part of the state where it still gets pretty cold.”
They, along with other groups in Wisconsin, are working to ensure all 17 families have a warm place to live by the time winter arrives. They have connections to volunteers helping in the area, including Nicole Behrendt of Visible Church in Howard.
“What we did see was flood damage; it’s a very poor community,” Behrendt said. “It’s very sad that these people have been left to fend for themselves. It’s sad there’s not more help. It takes a group from Wisconsin, many groups from Wisconsin, to come together to help all these people when no one else is doing it.”
The Radues are grateful for their community’s generosity as they work toward their $2,000 goal.
“We do have access to a lot of people in our community, which is a generous, giving community. And I thought, ‘How can our business help, how can we make a difference for at least a family?’” Vicki said. “People coming in are saying, ‘You know, I didn’t know how to donate. And I wanted to give something; this is something I know I can trust and a way we can be involved.’ So it’s a win for everybody.”
The fundraiser will continue through at least Friday and may be extended depending on the response. They hope to raise enough for a second or even third camper if they’re successful.
“It’s a way for us as a group to give back and work with our community. I mean, we really owe them so much; we’re blessed,” Vicki said. “Maybe we’ll be on our way to a second camper. So we’ll see what happens during the week.”

Visible Church is also planning a toy drive for the children affected by the hurricane in the week after Thanksgiving.
“The community wraps itself around us. We’ve been here 25 years, and they have always stepped up in a big way,” Mike said.
