WASHINGTON (DC News Now) -- As the holiday season approaches, more than half of shoppers report feeling stressed about finances and spending, a new Experian survey found. The findings come as the National Retail Federation predicts holiday spending will rise this year to $902 per person nationwide. In addition to feeling stressed, consumers feel they're pushing their limits. The survey found that 63% of shoppers feel that they spend too much during the holiday shopping season. "Almost everyone's telling us that it's stressful and that, that they're concerned about overspending and trying to find ways to control that spending impulse and to help save the money and perhaps, use other financial tools to help reduce some of that stress," Rod Griffin, Experian's Senior Director of Consumer Education and Advocacy said. Shoppers tell DC News Now they're already planning how they will buy gifts this holiday season. Experian found that 90% of shoppers are tempted to overspend. "I already have a list that I wrote down, I think, last week because I was like, there's going to be a lot of people. I have a lot of family coming in too," Maria Carrillo said. Overspending is one issue; Accruing debt from spending is another. Nearly 60% of people will use a credit card for at least some of their purchases. Griffin advises that credit card users keep track of interest rates and due dates to avoid cascading financial woes. "Set a date for yourself so that you're not paying on this year's holiday spending next year and increase that stress. And you would be amazed at how many people find themselves in that situation," Griffin said. The survey found that 15% of shoppers 18 to 44 years old will apply for new credit cards this holiday season. Experian offers a credit card marketplace, including no-ding-decline options. That means a consumer's credit score won't be impacted if they do not qualify for a card.
