(KRON) – The Benicia Police took to its social media to warn residents of fraudulent telephone calls residents were received. The department said officers were notified that residents were receiving phone calls and voice messages from an individual claiming to be a Benicia police officer. The suspect tells residents they have been a victim of identity theft.  The imposter is even using a false badge number, according to Benicia PD.  Officers on the scene at Gunn High and Palo Alto High due to unconfirmed threats The suspect is spoofing Benicia PD's official traffic unit and station non-emergency phone numbers, which are (707) 745-3411 and (707) 745-3412.  Spoofing is a fraudulent practice in which communication is sent from an unknown source disguised as a source known to the receiving. “Any incoming call from one of these numbers is a scam,” said Benicia PD.  The department cautions residents against giving any personal information to callers.
