LUVERNE, MN (KELO) — High school students have a lot of options to consider when looking ahead to college. One Minnesota community and technical college is trying to help by giving students hands on experience in a variety of medical related careers. Reports: Noem for Homeland Security High school junior Austyn Pap's dream job is inspired by her personal life experiences. "So I have type one diabetes, so I'm thinking that I want to go more into that by being a diabetes educator. So when I was in the hospital, I had lots of people come and talk to me and just explain to me what it was," junior, Austyn Pap said. Scrubs Camp, at Minnesota West, looks to help students like Pap get a better idea of what a career in health care would look like. "Today they're going to do a casting of their finger. So you get to learn how to do that process. And MLT They're going to do blood typing, not necessarily for these students to figure out what their blood type is, but to see the process and how it's been, how it's done," Health Careers Navigator, Toni Brouillet said. The camp offers hands on experience, giving students an idea of what to expect in college and beyond. "We are showing the students how to gown and glove is surgically cleaned sterile. Keeping our sterile field where it's supposed to be on there as well, are using the laparoscopic machine that we have back there to go in and take out kidney stones. And you use instruments for laparoscopic machines," Surgical Tech student, Kayla Wolfe said. Those experiences make a difference - just ask Brynn Peterson. "This scrub camp two years ago is what made me decide to go into this program. So I just really enjoyed the program and I saw how important it was to me and my education," Peterson said. "There's so many different opportunities. And as a high schooler, you might wanna think you really have your mind set on one thing, but then you just could totally find something else and be like, 'That's what I want to do'," Pap said. Students learned about a variety of different programs, from dental assistant, to surgical technology, Phlebotomy, and more.
