WESTFIELD, Ind. -- An astronomical new development could be coming to the city of Westfield soon.
Grand Universe just announced plans for a brand new multi-million dollar science, technology, and space campus on 66+ acres of land near Grand Park.

“If you are going to do something, why not just think big,” said Greg McCauley, the president, CEO and founder of Grand Universe.
The City of Westfield is teaming up with Grand Universe to help launch this project from the ground up.
“We worked together and came up with a partnership so to speak of ideas to create this tourism area where we could combine the sports success of Grand Park and combine that with STEM education with our nation’s new ventures into human space exploration and we came up with Grand Universe,” McCauley said.
Right now, the plan is for the development to include four districts.
The Grand Universe District will be home to the new Grand Universe Center for Science and Space Exploration featuring one of the world's largest full-dome planetariums.
“We plan on being the most innovative and most inspirational space science center in the country,” McCauley said.
The Resort District will include a space-themed hotel and a new convention center.
“I think this will bring in a different form of tourism than what we have seen in Westfield,” said Mayor Scott Willis with the City of Westfield. “I think we will be getting people from all over the Midwest quite frankly coming into this planetarium that wouldn't be here otherwise. Maybe their kids don't play sports. This is just going to be another opportunity to put Westfield on the map and get more people into our community, spending dollars in our restaurants, shops, and hotels.”
The Town Center District will include luxury apartments, retail and commercial space while the Sports and Entertainment District will feature a variety of new facilities, outdoor plazas and dining options.
“We are really excited about the potential,” Mayor Willis said. “It’s right next to Grand Park. 5.5 million visitors that come to the park every year will be able to enjoy this. It'll be another reason to come to Westfield and I think the collaboration between the two entities will be very powerful for our city.“
If approved, the completed project could top off at more than a billion dollars in new development for the city.

“It’s amazing what happens with tenacity and finding the right people on your team and never giving up. You can accomplish anything and I think that will be our legacy,” McCauley said.
Construction will hopefully start in the spring focusing first on the Center for Science and Space Exploration. The goal is to have things up in running in mid to late 2027.
“I believe we can inspire young people not just from this area and all of the schools around central Indiana but we can inspire kids from all over the U.S., maybe all over the world,” McCauley said.
A public hearing to discuss the project in more detail will be happening at the Advisory Plan Commission (APC) meeting on Dec. 2, 2024, at 7 p.m. at City Hall.
