Human remains of at least one person, and possibly another, were discovered inside the freezer of a Michigan townhome after blood was spotted on the floor, local law enforcement said. Officers with the East Lansing Police Department responded to the residence shortly after noon last Thursday when a person, said to be a manager of the townhome, called 911 to report the “suspicious situation.” “After thoroughly searching the residence, ELPD officers located a deceased individual inside a freezer,” authorities said. “Possible human remains of a second individual of unknown gender were also found inside the freezer.” Evidence from the scene is being examined at the Michigan State Police crime lab, and the incident is being treated as a homicide. No arrests have been made and there’s currently no person of interest, though police do not believe there’s an active threat to the public. While the investigation is ongoing, East Lansing Interim Police Chief Chad Pride said it may be difficult to prove what happened. “We don’t believe this happened last night or within the last couple days. I believe this is something that happened further back,” Pride told WLNS, noting the pool of blood was already dried when they found it. “My hope is we find something quickly that way the public can be at ease, family can be at ease, neighbors can be at ease.” Neighbor Andrew Whitney told the station he hadn’t seen anyone enter or exit the house in months. He did not say if he knew the identities of the people who lived there. East Lansing is about 90 miles northwest of Detroit in central Michigan. Last month, remains found in a Colorado freezer in January were identified as Amanda Leariet Overstreet, a teen who had disappeared in 2005.
