In the midst of chaos, there is also opportunity Even though tip-off was in the evening (“daylight” savings no less), and the Sacramento Kings are always live for a “light the beam,” light up the scoreboard at any moment, this Spurs team was not going to let any sun glare or opposing defenses’ hands in their face stop them from getting a win.
Victor Wembanyama led the all players with 34 points, pulled down 14 rebounds, and swatted 3 shots. Chris Paul kept the ship steady with 12 points, 11 assists, and 6 rebounds while Julian Champagnie continued to provide solid starting minutes with 13 points and 6 rebounds.
Nothing but arms in this highlight: a block, an overhead swing pass, the swoosh. Arms. All arms. Cthulhu itself could not do better in this sequence.

Devin Vassell! It’s been a while. Come on down. Have a three. Have three actually: Vassell went 3 -5 from deep in just his second game back. He’s shooting a blistering, unsustainable 54.5% from three-point land. It’s a sight for sore or blinded eyes (CeeDee Lamb has entered the chat) to see number 24 flying around out there.

Defense to offense fluidity. When the entire team moves in sync on both ends of the floor, it’s easy to see how the Spurs can win. I think we can confidently say that while we’re eager for Coach Popovich to return to the sidelines, when the team is playing this confident and in unison, Mitch Johnson gets a lot of credit for getting his guys ready.

You don’t want to see him angry. Well I do. We all do. Harrison Ford does too. Wemby smash!

Stephon Castle’s game down low is not to be trifled with. His finishes at the rim seem to be beyond what typical rookies are capable of. The patience and maturity stand out whenever you see him operate in the paint.

Keldon Johnson is rubber, you’re glue. Whatever bounces off him sticks for two. Johnson is the classic sixth man who plays like a starter. He’s like Manu Ginobili if Ginobili took Jesse Spano levels of caffeine pills (and Ginobili did not lack for energy).
When this team is at full strength, suddenly having someone like The Big Body on the bench makes the Spurs deep.

Harrison Barnes! Think of the children. I don’t want to say Harrison Barnes has been in the league a while, but he’s been around long enough to remember when Chris Paul was around long enough to remember Tim Duncan who had been around really long enough.
Who remembers David Robinson who had been around long enough to OK we could go on, but hopefully Barnes and Paul can go on too. The twin grizzled veterans of the Spurs youth movement have provided the professionalism and experience that fans expected.

This play was my favorite of the night because Wembanyama’s tentacles are as constant as the night sky. Usually you see a spin move to get points; I am not sure I’ve seen a spin move to prevent points. The threat of a block can be more effective than the block itself—at least I think that’s what Sun Tzu said in “The Art of War.”
