SPINDALE, N.C. (WSPA) - Spindale police are looking for a man they said has been scamming people by promising to sell car ports he does not own.
According to the Spindale Police Department, on Ocotober 12, officers were called to a home on Kentucky Street after a resident saw a man he didn't know disassembling his metal carport without his permission.
The man told police he had purchased the carport from someone who identified himself as Joseph Lane. The resident contacted the homeowner and confirmed the carport had not been sold nor had they given anyone permission to sell it on their behalf.
The man reassembled the carport and filed a police report due to being scammed out of his money. Police said Joseph Lane was later identified as Christopher Joseph Fite.
When confronted about the incident, Fite told police he had sold the carport at the request of a third party.
Since then, police said at least three other carports have been reported stolen in Spindale, and Fite has been identified as a suspect in at least one of those incidents.
Police are asking anyone who has purchased a carport from Fite or his alias, Joseph Lane, or from Facebook Marketplace to please contact the police department.
"Spindale Police Department would also like to remind people that when using Facebook Marketplace it is important to be vigilant for scams and to verify ownership of the property they are purchasing," the department said on Facebook. "If you are in doubt, please reach out to Law Enforcement so that you can prevent yourself from becoming a victim."
Fite currently has outstanding warrants for obtaining property by false pretense. Anyone who has seen him or knows of his whereabouts is asked to call police.
