FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) GFL began collecting trash and recyclables from Fort Wayne residents in July of 2022. It took over from Red River which had been plagued with a poor service record during its years as the solid waste collection provider for the city. GFL has been using the routes already in place from when Red River collected trash, but after two years the company has identified ways it can provide even better service by making those routes more efficient. What that means is about 25 percent of GFL customers will see a change in their collection days; starting December 2, 2024. To find out if your trash and recycling collection days will change, go to this web address and enter your address: https://garbagerecyclelookup.cityoffortwayne.org. Residents impacted by the change will also receive information in the mail from GFL. In a news release outlining the change, the following examples were given as to how it will benefit city residents. Drivers will have a consistent route with the changes, which will help them increase their efficiency. GFL will incorporate more automated trucks, which are safer for employees than the rear-loading trucks being used for curb collections. This will allow them to move rear-loading trucks from curb routes to alley routes. This safety measure will help GFL retain and recruit staff as well as reduce injuries. Since the new routes will save time, the result will be fewer trucks on the road, which means less wear and tear on City streets, safer roads for the public, and a lower carbon footprint due to the trucks using less fuel. There will also be less wear and tear on the trucks, which will keep them in service longer, reducing possible service disruptions. These changes will position GFL for continued efficiency in the future as the City continues to grow.
