AUSTIN (KXAN) — New delivery robots are wheeling around downtown Austin amid a partnership with Uber Eats.
Austin-based autonomous vehicle company Avride announced in early October a multi-year collaboration for planned robotaxi and delivery services. Beginning this week, the sidewalk delivery robots will run course between Cesar Chavez and 15th streets and Interstate 35 and West Avenue.

Those ordering from participating restaurants with Austin could have their delivery made by one of the Avride robots. Company officials added robots are already operating at local restaurants like Mai Thai Restaurant and Maiko Sushi.

Customers can opt to decline a robot delivery service and instead have the order completed by a courier; those who do approve a robot delivery will be able to track the order's progress and receive an arrival notification in the Uber Eats app, per Avride officials.
"Once you’re with the delivery robot, simply tap 'unlock' in the Uber Eats app to open the robot’s hatch and access your order," officials added. "The robot will wait for up to 10 minutes at the delivery location to ensure there’s plenty of time for you to collect your food."
The arrival of Avride delivery robots in Austin is the first of planned expansions into Dallas and Jersey City. Avride leaders flagged the company will gradually add new Austin neighborhoods into the delivery network over time.
