AUSTIN (KXAN) -- Two Austin Police Department officers finished a nearly 500-mile run across Texas over the weekend as a way to honor officers who have died in the line of duty. They finished the trek almost a year to the date of the anniversary of fellow APD Officer Jorge “George” Pastore's death.
Sergeant Ben Mewis and Detective Scott Baldridge ran 497 miles from the Rio Grande in Laredo to the Red River in Gainesville. They started the seven-day journey on Nov. 3.

The purpose of the run was to raise money for the Peace Officers Memorial Foundation, which helps maintain memorials, hold memorial events, and provides up-to-date information about line-of-duty deaths.
Monday marked the first anniversary of the death of Austin Police Officer Pastore, who was shot and killed while responding to a domestic violence call in south Austin.
Mewis was there that night and said it was an honor to run for Pastore.
Since Pastore's death, he has been recognized for his service and bravery with the Medal of Valor and a Purple Heart.
During the run, 29 APD officers each ran one mile to honor the 29 fallen APD officers. Lakeway Police ran one mile and Round Rock Police ran five. Each department joined at Hesters Crossing Road and Mays Street, just north of Austin.
