GREECE, N.Y. (WROC) -- A local business owner, coach and military veteran is being honored this Veterans Day after enduring utterly tragic losses earlier this year. Chad Wright is the owner and a coach with Cheer Athletics Rochester, located on Elmridge Center Drive. Chad is mourning the loss of his parents, Dan and Eveyln, along with nine other family members who all died when Hurricane Helene tore through North Carolina at the end of September and into October. “It takes your breath away”: Volunteers from Rochester help Hurricane Helene survivors To help his family in this unbelievably tragic time, gym staff put together a "Clinic for a Cause" fundraiser. From a new dance routine, to stunt drills, tumbling practice opportunity, and a whole lot of fun, friendship and love, the event drew in support from all across the region. "Losing both your parents and nine other members of your family - the recovery process I don't think is really standard. I mean, healing - he is for sure trying to be in that healing mode right now. Today being Veterans' Day and being a vet - he gets to be a part of Veterans Day events, so I know that that's a little bit of light in his tunnel right now," said Sabree Gamel, Coach and Co-Owner at Cheer Athletics Rochester, who also described Chad as a person who defines the term 'selfless.' "He really gives it with all of his heart - he would give anybody the shirt off his back so to see this turnout for one of our co-owners Chad is unbelievable and I'm so happy that we can show him just a little bit of love with the love that he gives and provides for all of us," Gamel said. "We've definitely have been checking back and forth with him - he's staying busy which is typically how Chad is - move on and forward - but he's doing as best as can be expected. And I think it really means a lot to him, and it means a lot to us, to bring the community together and do this for him. Even though it's so far away, it's extremely close to our hearts," added Amy Wertheim, General Manager at Cheer Athletics. It was the highest attended clinic in the fours years Cheer Athletics has been in the Rochester area with more than 70 athletes taking part. It was $75 per participant with 100% of the proceeds going directly to Chad and his family to help offset funeral expenses, among other costs for rebuilding and more. The event began at 9 a.m. and also featured a card-making station for cheerleaders to write a note to Chad, and other local military servicemembers, to thank them for their service. "Honestly I hope that he just sees how much he truly is loved and cared about - even with us being so far away and as far as everybody else - just helping one another and being there for one another and what greatness can come from coming together and doing something," said Savannah Cerone, Cheer Athletics Program Director. "Seeing all of the different gym colors come together and work together and just have such a great time is - it's huge!" she added. Student athletes who helped lead the event talked about how Chad, as a coach and mentor, has made a lasting impact on and off the cheer mats. "This gym itself means a whole lot to me - I didn't really have much of a family back at other gyms I've been at so having the coaching staff here and the athletes that I've been cheering with - they've all helped me grow as a person," said Zak Voos, a Level 5 team member and current high school junior. "Since I've been here it's just been really welcoming...the coaches here have been really helpful to teach me a lot of skills - I've been able to provide it to a lot of the kids here. And it's just been a really good experience," said fellow Level 5 team member Gracie Scally, also a junior in high school. "This gym changed my life! It has really helped me grow and I just want to give back to these kids - make them have fun and enjoy their time here!" added Serena Harrington, also a Level 5 team competitor and a recent high school graudate. Donations are still ongoing. Just before the clinic ended, it was announced a total amount raised was $6,500. You can donate by scanning the QR code below:
