MERCED, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - A historic fountain is now flowing again in Merced's Applegate Park's rose garden after years of restoration.
Merced city officials say since 1888, Laura Fountain has been an enduring symbol of the city. It was commissioned by the city's founder, Charles Henry Huffman, and named after his wife Laura Kirkland Huffman.
The fountain was placed near the El Capitan Railroad Depot, and officials say its charm made it earn the nickname "Fountain City". The fountain was relocated to Applegate Park in 1935 by Huffman's son, Jay Walton Huffman.
The city says over the years, the fountain's need for restoration became clear. The fountain was restored and came to life in the city during a ceremony held on Monday.
City officials add they are looking forward to an official rededication ceremony planned for spring.
