'You were worth it': Clovis veterans reflect on years of service

CLOVIS, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - The Clovis Veterans Memorial District hosted an event to honor local veterans on Monday.
They had a car show, a pancake breakfast and educational stations.
While the holiday may have been special, organizers say every day should be Veterans Day.
“Here, we make sure that every Veterans Day, we take the time to break bread together and let every veteran in the community know how much we appreciate them," Clovis Veterans Memorial District CEO Lorenzo Rios said.
He says behind every uniform is an ordinary person who made an extraordinary sacrifice.
One such person is retired Army Medic John Cline, who served in the Vietnam War when he was 19.
“What helped me to get through Vietnam was being a medic because I was giving aid to people and doing something to help other people. That really helped me to get through, and it continues to help me to get through,” Cline said while looking at a display of his old army photos.
Hundreds attended Monday’s event to honor veterans like him.
However, he says in 1970, his reception was very different.
“It was not good. It was not good at all… I unfortunately ended up in San Francisco in my uniform in 1970, and that was not a good thing,” Cline said.
Now Cline works with organizations committed to making sure no future service man or woman is treated the way he was.
“The gift that somebody can give me is when it comes from their heart and they say, ‘thank you for your service.’ I tell them, ‘you were worth it and the country was worth it,’” Cline said.
As nice as annual events are, he hopes people remember veterans’ sacrifices every day, never taking their freedoms for granted.
