Edisto River area of Colleton County sees "historic" flooding
Nov 11, 2024
COLLETON COUNTY, S.C. (WSAV) - People who live along the Edisto River were preparing for a long night Monday evening, experiencing what Colleton County Fire and Rescue called historic flooding.
"It's worse than it was when hurricane Debbie came through a couple of weeks ago," resident Kevin Peterson said.
By 6 p.m. Monday, the Whetstone Crossroads neighborhood on Sidney Road along the Edisto was completely blocked in with water.
"I know that campground is probably pretty devastated back there. There's probably 30 or 40 campers back there in that campground, and there's four or five houses alongside the river right here," Peterson said.
One of the last opportunities for people to evacuate was Sunday or earlier in the day Monday.
Fire officials have already been called out for multiple water rescues.
"We got a report that it was chest-deep in some person's house. So, chest-deep in a house that's already on a crawl space, elevated, that's a lot of water. So, that's one thing people can expect," KC Campbell, a Captain with Colleton County Fire and Rescue, said.
"The most dangerous time is going to be pretty much the next 12, next 24 hours or so. That's when it's gonna be the worst." he continued.
Locals described similar conditions.
"It's definitely up higher and further than it was a couple of weeks ago. So, it's running over the road pretty good there," Peterson said.
Fire and rescue were set up down the highway, but, once it got dark, they had to move the operating base, awaiting any potential calls.
"We don't really want to send rescuers out, but they're there to evacuate people. If we need to do that, that's what we're going to do," Campbell said.
For those who choose to stay, emergency personnel urged them not to try and navigate the water.
Fire rescue says the water level isn’t expected to crest until about 1 p.m. Tuesday, but the most dangerous time for people to be in the area is going to be overnight.
They say that's the most difficult time for a water rescue.
