ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – There is no room for error. The UNM football team traveled to San Diego last week knowing they have to win the rest of the games on their schedule to reach bowl eligibility. The Lobos responded with a 21-16 victory over the San Diego State Aztecs, making it one down and two to go. The second game is against 19th-ranked Washington State on Saturday.

The Lobos haven't beaten a ranked team since 2003. "To say or to downplay that number one it's not fair, its not right, nor is it accurate," said UNM head football coach Bronco Mendenhall. "This is the University of New Mexico fighting for postseason eligibility against a ranked opponent at home, and it's game eleven. How can you downplay that? Now that we have acknowledged it we play football."
The Lobos have four victories this season, stopping losing streaks to multiple opponents along the way. Offensively the team has been explosive with quarterback Devon Dampier leading the way. Defensively the Lobos have struggled, but have improved each week with the last game being one of the best performances this season.
The defense will be counted on for a good showing Saturday as they face an offense that has helped Washington State put up an 8-1 record behind a star quarterback in John Mateer. "Right, that forces matchups that are sometimes not in your favor," said Mendenhall. "Sometimes you have to be more aggressive and sometimes you are less aggressive, but that has to be a moving target. Not only does he run well, but he throws well much like Devon. And, I think that has to do a lot with their success, but their scheme overall is very good offensively."
The Lobos and Washington State have a 7:30 pm start time on Saturday. The game is Senior Night for the Lobos and will be broadcast on FS1.
