Marine veteran awarded Purple Heart over 50 years after being wounded in Vietnam

OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) — A Marine veteran received some recognition on Monday morning that was long overdue. He was wounded during Vietnam but never received a Purple Heart. Thankfully now he has, and KFOR was there when he got it.
"I wouldn't change it if I could,” Jimmy Ohlheiser said. “There ain't no way."
That’s a statement coming even 56 years after Ohlheiser was wounded in Vietnam. Now as he says it though, he finally dons an award on his chest that he so rightfully deserves, which is a Purple Heart.
"What does your country mean to you?" News 4 asked.
"Damn near everything,” he said.

He was just 19 years old in September 1968 when he was shot in the head while fighting overseas.
"A devastating injury,” Ohlheiser’s brother John said. “He ended up paralyzed on the left side."
"I'm just glad I came through it in one piece,” Jimmy said.
After over a year of being in the hospital on leave, the military retired him. The only problem is his discharge paperwork never recognized his Purple Heart.
However, after some talking between Sen. James Lankford’s office and the Marines, a full house was inside the Norman Veterans Home Monday morning to watch that oversight be corrected.
"Our country is a better place because of your service, and I am grateful Oklahomans can call you one of our own,” a woman read from a letter from Lankford to Jimmy.
His brother John and fellow Marine Kenny were by his side the whole time as got the recognition he deserved. Despite quite the delay, all's well that ends well for one of our nations true heroes.
