They will be one of the first families moving back into the area, just in time for Christmas. He was living with his wife in a finished ohana unit in the back. Shopping event on Maui supports local, Lahaina businesses impacted by wildfire "Because it was brand new, they just reissued a permit," said Milne, Lahaina resident rebuilding his home in the impact zone. He submitted right-of-entry forms immediately and his property was one of the first cleared back in January. KHON2 met him this summer when his ohana unit was under construction. Four months later, it's almost complete. "It's come a long way and we're on target for Christmas," Milne added. "We start with my wife's sunshine front door, bringing in the sun of Maui. This will be the living room and kitchen there will be an island there. There will be a dining room over in that corner, and then back here we've got the bathroom. I'll have wood window frames with trim and yeah it's pretty exciting." Maui County said 128 permits have been issued in Kula and Lahaina with 183 under review. As of Oct. 31, there were 55 homes under construction. "I love it, every day I drive by and I see a new house started," said Gene. "The husband and wife, and kids and they're pointing at things and they're planning, they're thinking about how life is going to be shortly." For now, Gene is living in his trailer with his wife and dogs with water and temporary power. "I know for me, starting to rebuild was a healer. It helped me heal, I was not in a good place mentally prior to coming back. Once I was back on island, doing something and moving forward life changed. I felt better, I was more energized and it really does help." He said contractors are getting busier, so residents should plan ahead for that and higher costs.
