ALLEN COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) — Northwest Allen County Schools is setting its eyes on the next ten years.
"We've started to work our way through that 10-year-plan," said Superintendant for Northwest Allen County Schools, Wayne Barker.
At Monday's board meeting two major facets were discussed, transportation and athletics.
"Two basic components of it are construction projects and then the operational needs to be able to staff those potential construction projects," said Barker.
Barker said transportation where they are now is restricted, with nearly 6,400 students utilizing busses every day.
"We are restricted in parking spaces, fueling stations, restrooms for our drivers, we've just outgrown the facilities," Barker said. "We need to look at what to do to plan for the future because we're going to continue to grow."
They hope that with the 10-year plan, they not only will be able to find solutions, through getting a new transportation building, that can house a greater capacity of students as the district grows to build but also fund those solutions.
On the athletics side the district is looking at new turf for baseball fields that would allow them to be used more.
The hope with the addition of turf is to better the experience for kids, by always guaranteeing the ability to play, unless there is lightening, according to Baker.
"We are looking to try and provide the best experience for our students, for our fans, for visiting teams," Baker said.
The district also passed a new teacher payment plan tonight. The new pay will give the average teacher in the district a 1.3% raise.
"We did the best with what we had," Baker said, adding that most teachers were understanding even adding that the district hopes to do even more for teachers' pay in the future.
Baker said the measure is doing what they can with limited resources to stay competitive.
