Pueblo Jingle Bell Rock returns with Nick Donovan
Nov 11, 2024
(PUEBLO, Colo.) — A decades-old Pueblo tradition returns with its original namesake this holiday season -- Pueblo's Jingle Bell Rock!
The contest began more than 50 years ago at local radio station, KDZA. Organizers would paint a rock and let listeners get a good look at it, before hiding it somewhere in Pueblo. Radio personality Nick Donovan became the voice of the hunt in the 1980s, and it became a tried-and-true tradition, with a multitude of sponsors backing the contest and families all over Pueblo lacing up their shoes and hitting the town in search of the rock, and with it, big prizes.

The hunt was marred by controversy in 2023, after Donovan transferred to another local station--KPHT--owned by iHeart Radio. After Donovan was let go, he tried to get the get the rights to the contest, but iHeart Radio went a step further and trademarked the contest.
With the tradition set to go on without Donovan, local fans made their voices heard.

In 2023, Donovan created his own scavenger hunt, called St. Nick's Pepper Hunt, with the Pueblo community rallying behind him. The couple who found the pepper, Michael and Bethany Webb, took home a check for $16,100, along with prizes and gift certificates totaling $13,495.
This year, the original tradition is back! The Greater Pueblo Chamber of Commerce is partnering with Donovan, KDZA 101.9, and 107.3 to host Pueblo’s favorite holiday scavenger hunt. This will mark the second year of the local partnership and a return of namesake moniker, “Pueblo’s Jingle Bell Rock.”
The first viewing of the coveted Jingle Bell Rock will take place at the Pueblo Riverwalk Holiday Lighting Extravaganza on Friday, Nov. 29 from 5 p.m. - 8 p.m. It will be on display at the Riverwalk’s Flood Wall Stage where KDZA and T-Mobile Fiber will be set up with music.
