101yearold Pueblo veteran shares his story
Nov 11, 2024
(PUEBLO, Colo.) — Monday was Veteran's Day, and people all across the state and country gathered to celebrate those who served.
Several veterans shared their powerful stories at a Veterans Day celebration organized by the Mt. Carmel Veterans Service Center in Pueblo. They urge all veterans to share their story, not just on Veterans Day, but every day.
101-year-old World War II veteran, Bruce Elson, shared his story of service. Elson was born and raised in Pueblo and served overseas. A former Sergeant, Elson was a member of the Air Force and Infantry in the early 1940s. He said it's important to learn about what the service members in your life went through.
"Most everybody has had somebody in the service. I realize that they're all being recognized, and that's a great thing, because that terrible space that we had in our lives is passed," said Elson. "The younger generation don't really realize how it was at that time. It was not much fun. I was sick a lot."
He detailed the struggles of getting Scarlet Fever, and what it was like to fight for our country in the Philippines and Japan.
"It certainly taught me to be obedient, I kind of carried that down to my children," said Elson. "[At] my age, I'm just thankful to be here. I just went through a little bit of of ill health, but right now I'm pretty well, and get along pretty good."
Those in attendance were encouraged to thank a veteran in their life every single day.
