GEORGETOWN, S.C. (WCBD) - Georgetown honored veterans with their annual Veterans Day parade on Monday. Organizers said it took about two months of planning to get all the participants and veterans together. The parade showcased those who served, high school bands, ROTC units, motorcycle clubs and more. Residents were lined up from its start at East Bay Park to downtown. "It's a great honor for them to participate in the parade and today we have a lot of community people on Front Street, supporting us,' Rodney Ward, commander of American Legion post 144, said. "They are proud to support the veterans here in Georgetown County. And we wouldn't be where we are today without the veterans." Among the veterans, most served in the Korean War, Vietnam War, and the War on Terror. However, this year the parade hosted the only World War II veteran - Jack Craig. Craig served for two years as a radar operator on a heavy bomber, and said being in the military changed his life. "I always liked science," Craig said. "Throughout high school, I always took all the science courses I could, but it was at a time when there was a depression and there wasn't much money around. So out of the war, out of my service time, I was able to go to college and it's shaped my whole life really." Veterans Day holds a special place for Craig as he tries to continue educating the youth. "You know what's important in my mind is to try and help the present generation understand what that all was about. It wouldn't be all that difficult to have the same conditions someday. So if you don't learn from the past, sometimes you make the same mistakes." Georgetown County continues to honor veterans and first responders with the 4th annual field of honor in partnership with International Paper and the Kiwanis Club of Pawleys Island. The charity event ends on Dec. 14.
