BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) - Inside Claiborne Elementary, students are putting the bookbags and school supplies to the side and will be taking home bags full of fresh vegetables and fruits - all thanks to a visit by the Joe Burrow Foundation.  Second-grade student Bailee Jackson and Third-grade student Mariana Perez are thankful for their fresh produce. Jackson even said it makes her feel like she went grocery shopping for her family.  “I got food for the house," Jackson said.  Both said they also learned about the importance of eating vegetables and fruits. “Vegetables are great for your body,” said Jackson.  “They make you smart and fast,” said Perez.  The visit is through the ‘Power of Produce Program.' The distribution and education event partnered up with local organizations and the EBR School System to bring interactive lessons about eating healthy, fresh produce tasting, and even a fresh produce distribution for local students.  Robin and Jimmy Burrow, parents of Joe Burrow, former LSU quarterback and Heisman Trophy recipient, said it's important to make a difference in the capital city through not only education but also helping with food insecurity in the area.  "Food deserts are a big issue, and this is the way I understand it, a neighborhood that has a low access rate for fresh produce," said Robin. "So we would just want to make sure that the kids are aware that when they have access to it, that they take advantage of it.” East Baton Rouge Parish Housing Authority’s program makes progress to improve communities They also said this is not just a one-time event but hope to continue making a difference locally.  “Joe wanted to give back to Baton Rouge and the people in this community. Joe likes eating healthy and he knows it's important for these young kids to learn what healthy foods are and what those healthy foods do for them,” said Jimmy. “We hope to do this with other schools down the road.” Latest News Three dead, four injured in separate weekend shootings in Lafayette.
