South Jersey Group II: Allentown field hockey ends 17win season with semifinal loss
Nov 11, 2024
HADDONFIELD — Allentown coach Kayla Peterson knew it would take a great effort to get the result the Redbirds coach was looking to achieve.
The first-year coach as usual got the effort she was looking for. It just wasn’t the right result.
The No. 3 seeded Redbirds battled hard but No 2 Haddonfield was way too much to handle and the Bulldogs came away with a 5-0 win in the state South Jersey Group II semifinal on a balmy Monday afternoon in Haddonfield.
Haddonfield (15-4-2) will face the winner of No. 1 Point Pleasant Boro and No. 5 Cinnaminson for the sectional title. The last two years Haddonfield has lost to Point Boro in the final.
Allentown finishes the season with a record of 17-7.
“I’m proud of the girls,’’ said Peterson. “We won the CVC and we had a few really good wins early in the beginning of the season. I told them they should be proud of themselves. I’m glad this game is not the vision of the season. It really was an incredible season and we have a lot to be proud of.’’
The Redbirds defeated Point Pleasant Boro, conference foes Hopewell Valley and Princeton, and then avenged a loss to Notre Dame with the CVC Tournament championship.
The game started with Allentown as the aggressor keeping pressure on the Haddonfield cage for the first 12 minutes.
The last three of the first period belonged to the Bulldogs, though.
They scored twice in a span of 31 seconds. The first came at the 2:23 mark and the second at 1:52, and it was the start of Haddonfield’s dominance.
“We had some chances early and couldn’t capitalize, then they got some chances and capitalized,’’ said Peterson. “They are an extremely good team. We needed to be a little quicker moving the ball.’’
The final tally for Haddonfield saw Olivia Marthins have a hat trick – her second this season against Allentown. She had three in the 5-1 regular season win.
Marthins, who also had an assist, now has 38 goals on the season and 119 for her career.
It was Margo Rhoads getting the first two of the game. Chloe Williams, Reese Corbett and Grace Porter had assists.
While the Redbirds struggled getting the offense moving, the defense held. Emma Dombrowski notched her fifth defensive save of the season, and Kylie Elefante, the all-time leader in saves at Allentown, was amazing in the cage with 31 saves.
“She’s incredible,’’ Peterson stated about Elefante. “I can’t say enough good things about her, and she’ll be a loss next year and I can’t imagine not having her back there. So many things could have been so different without her.’’
Elefante is joined by Dombrowski, Christina Sabbatini, Janeen Rukab, Hailee Ladu, Braylie Lafisca and Chloe Rubin as departing seniors.
“These seniors were my first group to coach when I had the freshman team,’’ recalled Peterson. “I’m glad I got to end this season with them.’’
It wasn’t the ending any of the Redbirds hoped for, but it was the end of a pretty memorable season.
