EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The East Providence Elks Veterans Committee held its third annual ‘Rucking for Roofs’ event to raise money for homeless veterans Monday morning. At 8 a.m., about 68 veterans and community members began the journey from Bristol to East Providence, walking a total of 24 miles. In 2022, the first ‘Rucking for Roofs’ event raised $25,716, and in 2023 raised $28,443. The non-profit organization said it hopes to raise $30,000 this year to help assist housing insecure veterans. Funds raised will go towards household furniture, rental assistance, Habitat for Humanity mortgage closing costs, and extend-stay hotels for veterans who await permanent housing.
