November is American Diabetes Month, and United Healthcare is aiming to help people get healthy by bringing back “The Healing Power of Cultural Food” event to Baltimore on Tuesday, Nov. 12 at 6 p.m.The virtual event will take place via Zoom and will encourage Black Americans ages 60 and over to help plan for healthy living. Baltimore’s renowned nutritionist, Angela Ginn-Meadow, will address attendees, and Chef Gregory Brown, owner of The Land of Kush, will also make an appearance.Ginn-Meadow will speak about the science-backed nutritional and healing benefits of traditional African American foods that can help reduce diabetes, heart disease, obesity, and even some cancers. Brown will offer actionable tips and techniques to incorporate food as medicine into daily life.Additionally, Rita Tolbert of United Healthcare will facilitate the Medicare education portion of the event. Tolbert has more than 25 years of experience in the health insurance industry. She prioritizes helping Black Americans have a clear understanding of Medicare and take control of their healthcare through education.According to the American Diabetes Association, an estimated 481,290 people have diabetes; that amounts to around 10% of the population. Another 33.7% have prediabetes — that’s approximately 1,600,000 Marylanders. Medical expenses for those with diabetes are approximately 2.3 times higher than those without it. Patients with diagnosed diabetes in Maryland were estimated to have $4.9 billion in medical costs in 2017.To register for the Zoom event, click this link.
