CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A Charlotte man was sentenced to life in prison on November 6, after a jury found him guilty of first-degree murder and multiple other offenses, according to a press release from the North Carolina District Attorney's Office.
The Mecklenburg County District Attorney's Homicide Team tried 29-year-old Christopher Chisholm with first-degree murder, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, three counts of possession of a stolen firearm, breaking and entering a motor vehicle and being a habitual felon.
Honorable Judge Louis A. Trosch Jr. sentenced Chisholm to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murder charge. For the remaining charges, Judge Trosch sentenced him to consecutive sentences totaling 112-159 months in prison.
The trial began on October 21, 2024, five years after the death of 56-year-old Robert Michael Hopkins.
WHAT HAPPENED?
On Dec. 20, 2019, officials say Chisholm and another male were attempting to break into vehicles in the parking lot of the Ayrsley Town Center in south Charlotte.
Surveillance video showed them backing their car into a parking space two spots away from the victim, Robert Hopkin's vehicle. The unidentified male attempted to break into the car between them and then tried the victim's truck. After he failed to get in, Chisholm reportedly pushed in the lock and began ransacking the inside of the truck.
Hopkins was leaving work at the time after attending his company's holiday party. He had stayed late to go over plans for the house he and his wife were planning to build.
As Hopkins approached his truck, he noticed Chisholm in the front seat. He approached Chisholm who ran to his car and got into the driver's seat. Hopkins stood in front of the car, attempting to stop Chisholm from fleeing.
Chisholm drove forward, striking and killing Hopkins before fleeing the scene.
Two days later, Charlotte police spotted Chisholm on McAllister Road in the same car he used to run over Hopkins. Following a high-speed chase with police, he was arrested. Stolen property was found inside the car as well as the victim's blood on the car's undercarriage, which was confirmed by lab testing.
