South Jersey Group II: Allentown field hockey ready for second chance against Haddonfield in semifinals
Nov 10, 2024
As the season progressed it became evidently clear that there were’t many flaws in the way the Allentown field hockey team goes about its business.
After the No. 3 seeded Redbirds (17-6) survived an overtime game with Wall in the South Jersey Group III playoffs, their attention turns to a semifinal against No. 2 Haddonfield (14-4-2).
Game time is set for 2 p.m. The other semifinal pits No. 1 Point Pleasant Boro against No. 5 Cinnaminson.
Haddonfield comes into the game unbeaten in the last 13 games (11-0-2).
Allentown, the CVC Tournament champion, has shown throughout the season to be a solid team up and down the field.
“This team has so many strong traits,’’ said first-year coach Kayla Peterson. “For one, it’s the depth we have to our lineup. It’s difficult for everyone to get recognition when there are players with high stats that get the credit. But it’s people like Christina Sabbatini, Addie Gingras and Avery Gower who might not have the most stats on the team but are absolutely essential to the success of our team. It’s hard to even just say a few names because there are so many who fall under that category.
“This team is resilient, we’ve been down in games where the girls could feel the pressure but they always know they just have to put the work in and it will turn out in their favor.’’
The Redbirds have some history with Haddonfield, having lost, 5-1, in late October.
“So far we’ve been successful playing a team the second time this season,’’ said Peterson. “Honestly it’s even more exciting to have lost and get another chance at a team. It’s always exciting to be the underdogs when no one is expecting to win, it’s just a chance to prove yourself as a team.’’
Ella Sluder leads the Redbirds with 30 goals and 10 assists, Avery Gower has 11 goals and 11 assists, Janeen Rukab has 13 goals, Hailee Ladu has 12 goals, Kelsey Loughlin has 12 goals and Addison Gingras and Marleigh White each has 12 points.
Kylie Elefante, who holds the school record for saves, has been solid in the cage all season.
“This time around, we’ll know how to defend their strongest players,’’ said Peterson. “That’s the beauty of playing a team the second time is you can use the adjustments you made in the game right from the beginning. We also need to take advantage of the opportunities we have in the circle, we missed out on some the last time but the girls are hungry for a win so they’ll do whatever it takes to get it done.’’
Olivia Marthins, who scored three goals in the first meeting, leads Haddonfield with 35 goals and 76 points, Ava Poliafico has eight goals and 10 assists and Gigi Eden has eight goals and five assists.
Goalie Ava Fasolo anchors a defense that has allowed just nine goals in the last 13 games.
“Haddonfield is a strong team,’’ said Peterson. “They have very talented players and a strong program so we just have to focus on winning every possession. We’re going into this game without holding back. The states gives anyone an opportunity to win on any day, it’s a brand new season so we are looking forward to proving ourselves.”
