Nov 09, 2024
The John Carroll men’s basketball team’s season opener wasn’t going exactly to plan 20 minutes in on Nov. 9.
The Blue Streaks — ranked No. 3 in D3Hoops.com’s Top 25 preseason poll — trailed by as many as 16 points against Albertus Magnus at the Penn State Harrisburg Tip-Off Classic in Middletown, Pa.
After 20 minutes, they trailed, 47-40, but in the second half it was all JCU as it scored 68 points in a 108-90 victory.
Mentor grad Luke Chicone — a first-team preseason All-America selection by D3Hoops.com — led the way with 27 points, 11 assists and four rebounds. He made 6 of 9 shots and 15 of 18 free-throw attempts. It was Chicone’s first game wearing No. 2, as he’s worn 0 in the past. The 15 free throws made tied JCU’s single-game mark. Chicone’s 11 assists tied his personal-best mark and it was the fourth double-double of his college career.
Four others were in double-figure scoring for the Blue Streaks, starting with post Will Yontek’s 18. Chase Toppin added 12 points and David Gentry and Luke Frazier of Lake Catholic each had 11.
Gentry had a team-high six rebounds and Frazier five. Frazier struggled from the field as he made just 2 of 15 shots. He did make 6 of 6 free throws.
JCU shot 50.8 percent from the floor (32 of 63) and had a huge advantage at the free-throw line as it made 38 of 51. Albertus Magnus was 24 of 27.
Trailing by seven at half, it took JCU just three minutes into the second half to take a 54-52 lead. Chicone was key in the three-minute burst.
The 14-5 run began with a layup by Chicone, then assists by Chicone on a Toppin layup and a 3-pointer.
A few minutes later, Chicone made a layup and a free throw to even the score at 52-52. A Frazier dunk at the 17-minute mark gave JCU its first lead of the second half at 54-52.
A David Gentry layup a few minutes later gave the Blue Streaks an 11-point advantage at 68-57 and they never looked back.
JCU next plays host Penn State Harrisburg in the championship game of the Tip-Off Classic. The game is scheduled to start at 3 p.m.
